Substance Abuse, Alcohol, and Marijuana Zero-Tolerance Policy

Area Wide Transport – Office Staff & Driver Policy

Purpose
Area Wide Transport is committed to ensuring the safety of our passengers, employees, and the public. As a non-emergency transportation provider, we maintain the highest safety standards. This policy establishes a strict zero-tolerance stance on substance abuse, alcohol use, and marijuana use while performing job duties.

Scope
This policy applies to all employees operating company vehicles or performing safety-sensitive functions, including all drivers.

Zero-Tolerance Policy
Area Wide Transport strictly prohibits:

  • The use, possession, distribution, or being under the influence of alcoholillegal drugs, or controlled substances while on duty or operating a company vehicle. 
  • Reporting to work or remaining on duty while impaired by any substance that may affect the ability to safely operate a vehicle. 
  • The use of marijuana in any form, including medical or recreational.


Marijuana Use
While marijuana may be legal under certain state laws, it remains illegal under federal law. As a company operating under Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and applicable federal regulations:

  • Employees are strictly prohibited from being under the influence of marijuana at any time while performing job duties. 
  • A positive drug test for marijuana will be treated the same as any other prohibited substance and will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination. 


Drug and Alcohol Testing
All drivers are subject to the following testing:

  • Pre-employment testing 
  • Random drug and alcohol testing 
  • Post-accident testing 
  • Reasonable suspicion testing 
  • Return-to-duty and follow-up testing (if applicable) 

Refusal to submit to testing will be treated as a positive result and will result in immediate disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
